Outreach overnight with BeWiSE

BeWiSE overnight – from SDSA website

As a newcomer to San Diego, I am still discovering all the science outreach opportunities the city has to offer. One such opportunity is a series of science “overnights” for girls hosted by BeWISE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering). I was lucky enough to be an adult (I guess I hid my inner child well?) volunteer for an overnight at the Living Coast Discovery Center.

While a mild cold kept me from staying overnight on the crowded wooden floors with 50 middle school girls – such a shame, I really missed out – I participated in all of the night’s activities. They ranged from learning the psychology behind dolphin training to an overview of manta ray biology. And yes, we got to pet the mantas. I initially objected, being too “mature” for the touchy-feely tank, but as soon as I felt one manta, they had to drag me away from the tank. The became the chaperone became the chaperoned.

The girls showed such excitement throughout the night. They were curious, energetic and hilarious. I had forgotten how much I like middle school humor. Inner child?  Events like these and people who organize them continue to inspire me to invest my time and efforts in the future of women in science – in my future as a woman in science.
